Covenants

God’s Two Covenants with Israel

These 2 Covenants are very different, & their functions are different.

Abrahamic Covenant = Relationship

Mosaic Covenant = Fellowship

Their fellowship can be broken, but their Relationship can never be broken.

Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis):

Mosaic Covenant (Exodus-Deuteronomy)

1: Text:

Gen 12:1-3,7, 15:18, 17:5-16

Ex 19:3-6, 20:1, 18-19, 24:6-8 Deut 29:25-27

2: Times:

Abraham’s later life (around 2000 BC)

600 years later after Jews Exodus from Egypt.

3: Settings:

Around Hebron, in the Holy Land (Canaan)

Before Mt. Sinai, in the Wilderness

4: Co-Signees:

God along (Abraham=unconscious) (Gen 15:17)

God & Israel (Ex 20:1, 18-19, 24:6-8)

5. Conditions

Unconditional (Gen 15:5-12, 15:17-18, 26:3-4)

Conditional (Ex. Chaps 20-24

Unchanging (God doesn’t change – Mal 3:6)

Changing -Leviticus (whole book)

Deuteronomy (whole book)

Everlasting (Gen 17:7-8, Deut. 7:9, Ps 105:7-11, Jeri 31:35-37

Temporal – Leviticus and Deuteronomy

6: “Signs”:

Circumcision (Gen 17:9-11)

Passover & Ark of the Covenant (I Kings 8:9,21)

7: Elements:

3 Parts:

1: Land (all Holy Land=Gen 12:7, 15:18)

2: Nationhood (Gen 12:2)

3: Blessing to World (Gen 12:2)

Many Parts:

Religious Laws, Ceremonial Laws, Civil Laws, Social Laws, National Laws, Health Laws (Blessings & Curses all related to Fellowship: in or out of)

(All of Exodus, Lev, Num, Deut.)

8: Function:

Establishes Israel’s Unconditional Relationship with God

Israel is married to God as Wife and her Husband. God is a Loving Husband (He will never divorce Her).

Establishes Israel’s Fellowship with God. (Conditional = Obedience)

Israel is a “son” to God as a Child to his Father.

God is a disciplining & training Dad. He can be in fellowship, or out of fellowship with child.)

Out of fellowship = discipline,

In fellowship = blessings

A very important fact: After (when) the Mosaic Covenant is broken (by disobedience of Israel), God will still operate upon the Abrahamic Covenant (unconditional & everlasting).

God states this exact point (fact) in Lev. 26:39-46 . (see also Ps. 105:7-10)

God is God! He does not change, nor will He change His mind. (Mal. 3:6. Ps.102:24-27. Romans11:28-29. Deut 32:3-4. I Sam. 2:2.

God has never cast away His People, the Jews (Israel); and He never will cast away His People. If He would cast away His People, it would be a Victory for Lucifer; and God would cease to be God. Israel is Important!
